Memory Of A Life
05:09
|
|||
Find a state and a meaning that you can justify
Behind a face inexpressive hidden from the light
Until a glance filled with longing from a lover’s eyes
Recalls another time, another place
You feel it move towards you from outside your sight
A gentle weight held against you that seems to multiply
Demanding all your attention, it whispers in the night
Was it another time
Was it another place
Feels like a memory
Of the life we made
How long did you hold your dreams until they broke you
How long did you hold onto your sense of virtue
Was the lie so magnificent it forced you to believe
To keep alive that brittle feeling that there still could be relief
It was another time
It was another place
Maybe in our next lives
You’ll recognise my face

Neon God
04:49
|
|||
and I was worn out
from the side effects
looking for a way out
but couldn’t read the map
tried to figure out
where the path would lead
with the neon god
watching over me
leave the keys on the dresser
we can talk all night
keep the tv playing
but turn off the light
if you want to sell your secrets
please be my guest
just as long as you stay
I’ll work out the rest
and I came adrift
like I was lost at sea
as the waves moved in
and washed over me
and the night had a weight
that kept a hold of me
with the neon god
watching over me
write the words on the paper
so that no one sees
we’ll figure out the prescription
to satisfy your needs
if you’ve a painkilling preference
to counteract your vise
it’s just a matter of choosing
and then paying the price
and the lights were out
high above the street
as the rain poured down
washing over me
running from my arms
running out of faith
looking for a way
to escape my fate
and the signs lit up
and they drew my gaze
took me from myself
into another state
as the rain poured down
and washed over me
with the neon god
watching over me
how long now
how long must I wait
how much now
how much will it take
burned out
from visions too bright
blinded
by my second sight
drawn out
inevitably
fallen
from what could have been
calling
out to the night
waiting
to find the light
and the night was long
and the stars went away
and the day belonged
to those thoughts kept at bay
and its eyes appeared
like a wound in space
and their colours blazed
all about my face
and it called to me
from high above the street
as the rain poured down
washing over me
and the neon god
watched over me
and the neon god
watched over me

Another Country
05:13
|
|||
For the lies you told to keep yourself together
For the wonders that you swore that you had seen
For the wounds you caused without a second thought but swear that you didn’t mean
You threw away your charm into your resignation
You gave away your chance at who you could have been
Skipping town to chase an answer that you thought you might have heard upon the wind
Doesn’t seem that smart to me
Can’t keep away now from the people that you’ve been
Can’t keep away all that you’ve seen
Take your photographs and burn them as an offering
Take your innocence and give it to the sea
Let the record show your knowledge of yourself is rooted only in your dreams
And their fanged subjectivity
Can’t keep away now from the things that you have seen
Can’t keep away from what they mean
Can’t keep away now from the things that you have dreamed
Can’t keep away from who you’ve been
For the path you took to find a quicker answer
For the nights you tried to hide behind a screen
For the desperation tugging at your limbs as you picked open all your seams
For the lies you told to keep yourself together
For the wonders that you swore that you had seen
Come look around now, see where you stand as the map closes in
Is it another country
Can’t keep away now from the people that you’ve been
Can’t keep away from what you’ve seen
Can’t help but try to keep the questions from the answers
Can’t help but hide inside your dreams
For the days still yet to come in all their wisdom
For the nights in all their shared complicity
For the shadow that you trail so close beside you that you never could deceive
For the light as it refracts into your vision
For the ground that slowly moves beneath your feet
Come look around now
Is it another country

Exits Are Illuminated
04:54
|
|||
Under lights that shine like stars above the street
Carving out the shadows stretched from you and me
Words unspoken - their voices incomplete
Things fall apart now as the silence screams
You were on the run
Away from an obligation
That kept your heart numb
Tried to keep you playing
All those losing games
That drew you to them
Like a moth to a flame
Signs that only keep you from your journey’s end
Flickering against the coldness of our skin
A silent memory that scars at once then heals again
You were on the run
Trying to break the tethers
Around what you’ve become
With a promised offering
And a whispered prayer
If I turned around now
Would I still find you there?
The light is fading
But the stars are out
The stars are out now
But our map is gone
In the shadow of the places that we’ve been
I turned around and tried calling out your name
Waited there until I heard your voice again
I waited there, but it never came
You were on the run
Trying to save your spirit
From the harm done
But if you ever find
That the light is fading
My love
I’ll keep the exits illuminated

The Ballad Of Forgetting
04:04
|
|||
We were young in our days
but you were older in your nights
with your hands curled to fists
against the dreams you had to fight
But the dawn held its promise
for another path in life
and it was the one place that I needed you
Looking back on the years
before the leaves began to fall
we believed in a magic
that might keep us from the cold
But now we know there’s no winning
so we’ve nothing left to lose
in the one place that I needed you
As all the horrors find their home
they take your heart and turn it into stone
try and find someone to break it open
and hold them close and safe inside your arms
Now we’re old in our days
but still the dreams come in the nights
with their tongues glistening silver
whispering promises of light
And I tried to forget them
but they stayed inside my mind
in the one place that I needed you
