In empty words In callous use You find your enemy Swallows your energy The palette drained Colour of bruise Infects your memory Corrupts your chemistry A vacant plain Mapped out in full Defines the territory Pollutes the history Unfettered time Untethered lies Infect your memory Corrupt your chemistry Another film For mass appeal Written as comedy Acted as tragedy Facile and inept Promises unkept Infect your memory Corrupt your chemistry Closed off and unused Mirrored walls, locked room Reflecting endlessly Reflecting endlessly Where is the heresy Heathen divinity God in your memories Corrupts your chemistry

In Bells 06:09
How long have you been mourning now? Do you even remember why? Did the night come and call to you? Did it trick you with stars in its sky? Were you tired in your heart? A picture book A flickering screen All these crooked poison paths Drawing you like a moth to a flame Take my tears and fold them into the sound of bells And in the night You feel the weight of it And in the night You hear their call again A hollow little pulse Pealing outwards into space Carried on the surface of time Just like ripples on a lake Take my tears and fold them into the sound of bells And in the night I’ll keep them away from you again

We Dance 05:59
Where you with me In that dream? Felt so familiar but not quite what it seemed Wish I could find a way to play back all those scenes Memory’s not what it used to be Faded photographs I keep in frames The colour slowly disappearing from the page The words we spoke The way we changed How much of it all remains? I hold you against me Again And feel your heart beat quicken with our steps Try to forget this moment will pass Keep us held in our arms As we dance dance dance The image breaks and distorts across the screen A gentle entropy of red, blue, and green It passes by me The pictures gone Is this another moment lost? But was there something more Than the light revealed A sense of recognition That was kept concealed And did I see the spark Of who I used to be And will I ever see it again Oh please don’t play back All those out of focus nights Keep them away, my love Keep our arms closed tight We can connect the dots Between all our lives And look for meaning in their scenes But when I feel your pulse Beating next to mine How fragile it all seems I hold you close against my chest And feel your breath quicken with our passing steps Try to forget this moment won’t last Keep us held in our arms As we dance We keep returning To where we began And let the music take us onwards once again Try to remember This all will pass And keep you safe inside my arms As we dance dance dance

Outstretched with open hand The fear remains Collecting to a defensive stance The pulse rising through your veins You keep replaying the horror stories Rewrite them with your name Whispering nightmares beneath the street lamps Flicker like moths across your gaze Do you remember how it felt To be protected from all this? To be alone with these thoughts Is it too much to take? Did you redraw the maps To keep out of sight Will the flowers come open For you and the night The stars won’t help you find your way Through a labyrinth built of names The course is set The light will fade Your walk the path that has been made The darkness slowly wakens around you Holding you within its bloom Tired from hearing the same old story You turn your back on the moon Do you remember how it felt To keep these dreams away? And now they close in around you Is it too much to take? Are the maps obscured Beneath the names you hide Will their flowers come open For you and the night

I think I did it again Cut a little too deep But let’s run it out And see how long we sleep I think I did it again Swallowed one too many But let’s wash it down And see if things get heavy Another card from the deck Another voice on the line Another picture in my head Another light behind my eyes Keep going Another die is cast Another dream is sold Another moment’s passed Another hand to hold Another twilight fades Another loss is felt Another empty wave Another cry for help Keep going - you wanted this Hooked on the rising sun Broken beneath its light Left to repeat your fallacies Safe in controlled activities Dirt underneath your nails Clawing against the sight Forwards but always stumbling Caring but somehow smothering Left to your own devices Infernal within their loops Programmed and then neglected Discarded and resurrected Working to break the patterns With only your strength of will Missing the coping mechanisms In all of their ravenous pragmatism A grand house of cards around you Divining against the storm But I think the forecast’s troubling Another crown comes tumbling Tell me what you want What you want to say No time for empty words now No time to play the game Don’t burnish your true reflection Don’t hide how you see yourself Let’s come to an understanding Of flesh and blood and nothing else Collecting around your image The details all painted black Keep closing your eyes to it But it keeps coming back The fractures of realisation Embedded within yourself Still cutting into the body Of flesh and blood and nothing else

Changeling 06:15
A shadow falls across the room Your face is turned away Did I not understand Things seem so different today The colours ache As evening arrives Falling out of place In the twilight Did we lose our way In the night? Are we so different today Or am I? Did I lose my way Trying to find the light? Are things so different today Or am I? Is it an echo from our lost time? The seasons changing the colour of my eyes A makeshift shelter around our lives Are we so different today You and I?

I’ll burn the candles down and See what shapes appear Meditate on what’s perceived Tallow run in rivers out about my open hands Slowly forms into a sea Hiding all that’s underneath It’s a shallow wave Cresting over me But it blocks out all the light Settle up all my accounts and Bury them with me To celebrate what they achieved Rain down until they blossom out of the decay A bloom of weeds and credit scores In the earth like an open sore And there’s nothing more to say The price is to be paid The choices that you made Carry a weight They carry a weight So now it’s time to show your hand Against another tilting play Yeah we know the deck is stacked But they still raise you anyway And you could try and claw it back In some version of the game Delight in all the luck That never slipped away Collecting all your hope Without weighing up your breath As all your demons gather round To administrate your death And you’d hold onto the pain If you could do it all again But try and keep your memories straight And always keep your eyes open Because wasn’t it enough Just to try and bear the weight When they came to call your name And the light began to fade With all the paperwork filled out And all the signatures in pen And you had wanted to cry out But you knew there was nothing left

You were always here waiting for yourself to arrive

about

Will their flowers come open
for you and the night?

After the elemental workings of Breaker to Returner, You & The Night focuses on depression, taking influences from Sylvia Plath and Al Alvarez through to lived experience. Here, however, is inquisition over invocation.

We Dance and Administrators Of The Death came in dreams. The other songs formed themselves through their usual means.

With love and thanks to Violeta Page, Richard Skelton, Autumn Richardson, Peter Grey, Alkistis Dimech, Tom Sewell, Ben Morris, Dale Cornish, Jon K. Shaw, Dan Lowe, Lisa Lavery, Tim Shaw, Dave Charlesworth, Michael Kasparis, Ryan Valentine, Christopher Bradford, and Chiara.
